What is Lockout Tagout (LOTO)?

Lockout Tagout, or LOTO, is a safety procedure and set of devices designed to prevent the accidental activation of machinery or electrical systems during maintenance or servicing. LOTO protects employees from hazards such as unintended machine operation, electric shocks, or the release of stored energy from equipment.
 
LOTO consists of two main components:
 
1. Lockout: Securing the equipment or machinery with a special padlock to prevent unauthorized activation.
 
2. Tagout: Attaching a warning tag that provides information about the lockout, such as the name of the person performing it, the date, or specific warnings, to notify everyone that the machinery is under maintenance.
 
What are Lockout Tagout Devices?

Unique padlocks used to secure energy sources, such as circuit breakers, switches, or valves. These locks can only be unlocked by the responsible person.
 
2. Warning Tags
Tags used to communicate details about the lockout to avoid misunderstandings.

Devices used to lock specific energy sources, such as valves, switches, or electrical circuit breakers.
 
4. Multiple Lockout Systems
Used when multiple workers are involved in the same task, allowing multiple padlocks to be attached to a single lockout device.
 
The Importance of Lockout Tagout
 
LOTO reduces the risk of accidents that may occur during equipment maintenance or repairs. It also ensures a safe working environment and compliance with safety regulations, such as those established by OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration).
 
Steps to Implement Lockout Tagout
 
1. Identify Energy Sources: Locate and identify all energy sources connected to the machinery.
 
2. Turn Off Energy Sources: Shut down power sources, such as electrical switches or valves.
 
3. Lock the Energy Sources: Use lockout devices to prevent reactivation.
 
4. Attach Warning Tags: Clearly display warning tags with relevant information.
 
5. Verify Safety: Ensure the machinery is isolated from energy sources and is safe to work on before starting.
 
6. Remove Lockout Devices After Completion: Once maintenance is complete, the responsible person should remove the locks and tags.
